Creating a 3D Mario World in axonometric projection

M2

The Making of the Projected World

There are endless ways to shape the world and to design the space given with the same two elevations. My projected world has a pyramid in the center, and everything is built around that pyramid. I cut the elements in the upper parts into slices and place them in different layers. At the same time, I tried to make more connections between and keep a balance on the right and left sides. I cut all of the pipes opposing them to each other on the two sides. Moving downward, things start to be covered by the water. Following the flow of the water, it connects everything as a whole inside of it, which are all invisible in the elevations.

Building Blocks for Creating a World

In the six elements I chose, water will be the most complete and smoothest component. Oranges boxes and bricks are medium and fragmented elements. I spent lots of time picking the colors trying to escape from the mood we get in the elevations. I added some light colors because I wanted my world to be colorful and cheerful.

Colours & Shading

The color plays a big role in perception. Without color, there can be parts that seem confusing in black and white lines but when the color goes in, we can quickly distinguish different structures in different colors.  We can easily tell where each part is in the space. Moreover, the shadow helps to build an illusion that this world is actually three-dimensional with depth, that Mario can actually walk in. I made layers just with translucent gradients to make the shadow. Those gradients suggest the direction of the light source and make the blocks look real. Apart from that, transparency gives texture to the water.

Reflection

The six elements I choose are orange boxes, bricks, pipes, cubes, pyramids and water. At the hand-drawing stage, the tracing technique that we first learned in Module 1 played a big role in composing the world. Instead of drawing the repetitive elements again and again, the vantage of translucent tracing paper allows us to copy and paste from what we had already built. Moreover, since grouped parts were drawn on separate papers, just by flipping each paper and moving it around on the main A3 paper, I could quickly preview different combinations and get inspired. That was as fun as putting together Lego pieces.

As we were required to construct an axonometric Mario world, there would be no vanishing point, and the top of the pipes would be a perfect circle. Therefore, I cut all the pipes in halves to avoid using the shape of a complete circle. I placed the pyramid in center. Above it were layers of oranges slices interlacing each other and two halves of pipes facing each other in distance. Meanwhile, I left the upper space around the pyramid relatively empty to preserve the focus on the pyramid and make the world a little symmetrical vertically. I set the color tone lighter and more colorful than the two elevations given, attempting to reach a lively and fantasy feeling. Great effort was made on coloring and light and shadow to make the world look natural. The lower part of the world is covered by water, which occupied the inside and flows out from the breaches of the brick construction. And the arrows hidden in the water would also indicate to look down. I like the texture of the water because the color change it brings and what is inside have made the whole picture more interesting and mysterious. At the same time, the wide surface and smooth shape of water would create a contrast with the rugged shape of other elements.
